If you’ve talked to me, or followed me for a while you will not be suprised when I say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Super8mm film. It is such a truly beautiful medium to film on. Whether you are using Super 8 to film a Wedding, small cuts in a Promotional Film or an Entire Music Video. You are always guaranteed to get a stunning result (if you treat the film and camera right!).

Lucky for me I have a few cameras to choose from when shooting Super 8, but I frequently find myself drawn to my Canon 814 Electronic Zoom. Not only does the camera have full Auto and Full manual control, it also offers a choice between frame rates (frames per second) of 18 fps, 24 fps and Slow Motion 40 fps! Who doesn’t love slow motion?

Things that I love about Super 8 cinematography are:

– There is no sound.

– The colours are quite basic

– It can be super grainy.

– Each Super 8 roll is limited to 3 minutes and those 3 minutes are rather pricey.

Sounds like I am trying to talk you out of it? NOT AT ALL. These are all the reasons I love it! It all adds up and makes you film SMARTER instead of just rolling on anything like you can do with digital these days. Each time I go to roll on the camera I survey the scene, check my focus, lighting and exposure, and roll. You can never be too careful when shooting onto film and preparation pays off!
Any excuse to get some rolls of Super 8 and shoot I will take it and the more I shoot Super 8, the more I am getting the chance to do it for Clients in Brisbane and Australia.

DVNT Clothing are a Melbourne-Based label that have gained some serious momentum since their birth in 2008. The brand got onto me about filming a promo for their new Womens range, specifically asking me to shoot Black and White Super 8mm for their Promo Film. The day was great, a really nice oldschool location made it stunning on film and a great model Ruby Gunnis who was lovely to work with.

I shot most of the day on a Red Epic, for their main Ad. In between shots on the Epic, fired off a few on the Super 8 Camera when the lighting was sitting perfectly. Very Stoked with the Slow Motion capabilities of the Canon 814 Auto Zoom, especially at the end of the film when Ruby is flying the american flag on the roof of the motel.
