Sometimes, you make a video as a little love project, or a joke to share with your mates. Your expectations are low, it’s a bit of fun and you think it’ll just stop there. This was the exception.

I’ll have to tell you about my mate Ben McCleay first. He is a truly lovely bloke that I met through playing in bands probably about 5 years ago. He became a freelance writer around the same time I became a freelance film maker and we have been trying to do something together since.

Fancy Coffee was scripted via facebook messenger, a bunch of text messages and random twitter chatter. After setting aside a day that we were both (finally) free of work, we knocked the filming over in about 8 hours. The edit was another story. It was a very intense back and forth edit which took me about a week to compile and cut, I wasn’t sure if it was funny anymore once I had finished the edit, and I honestly think now I could probably recite the entire script to you start to finish.

The part where it cuts to “Sooner or Latte'” was shot on the day we got together to finalise the edit, we felt it needed something more and could not stop laughing when we came up with the idea to make it cut to a Australian 90’s looking TV show (think Aristos Surprise Chef) Ben absolutely nailed the acting in this part.

The day came to release the video, we expected to get a few hundred hits on the facebook and youtube links, but the end of the first week (thanks to the good people of twitter and a few blogs) it had gained over 10 Thousand across both platforms. which was pretty mind-blowing to me, but it made me glad I had put all that hard work into the edit.

Lesson learnt: You never know what’s going to be shared, so be prepared.
